Listening to in 2012 - Lana Del Rey

Hardly the most left field of picks for 2012, nonetheless I will happily jump straight onto the bandwagon for this uber-hyped 'gangster Nancy Sinatra'. Controversy over her SNL appearances, millionaire father or allegedly surgically enhanced lips aside, what Lana delivers for me is a breath of fresh air in an increasingly stale heap of electropop. 'Video Games' was an unexpected highlight of 2011 - sultry vocals, haunting production and classic song structure that feels all too rare in a Dr Luke dominated pop landscape. I mean, where is the faux dubstep breakdown? Her other offerings are just as superb - 'Born to Die' can only be described as lush, and in 'Off to the Races' Lana shows off her quirky charm with a downright bonkers uptempo, laced with her trademark lolita-meets-Pulp Fiction style. Listening to unreleased material from the Artist formally known as Lizzy Grant, I'm eagerly awaiting her debut album. So please throw aside your doubts about 'authenticity' (who bloody cares?) and just enjoy what this clearly very promising girl has to offer.

Recommended songs: Video Games, Off to the Races, Mermaid Motel, Diet Mountain Dew (youtube it!)
